Our Mission

Bienvenidos/Welcome to our website! The Violence Intervention Program (VIP) is a nationally recognized Latina organization. Our mission is to promote nonviolent partner relationships, familias, and communities through raising awareness, activism, and culturally competent services that are respectful of each survivor's right to self-determination.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is the exertion of power and control by one individual over another; it can include physical, emotional, economic and sexual abuse.

  • One third of U.S. women report having been physically or sexually abused by an intimate partner.
  • Domestic violence crosses all racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, religious and economic boundaries.
  • Domestic violence is a crime punishable by law.

Domestic violence affects all of us: children, our extended families, our neighbors and the community at large.  VIP believes we must all share responsibility for ending domestic violence.  Through community education and activism we can work together to change attitudes and secure the necessary resources to promote domestic violence prevention and services.

"Battering" overstates the case. Few women are actually beaten.

Once violence has begun in a relationship it is likely to continue and to increase in frequency and severity. Battering can involve severe beatings, rape, the use of weapons, and mental or physical torture. Battering should not be viewed as discrete, isolated incidents resulting from family disputes, but as a pattern of repeated abuse from which the battered woman does not see an escape.

All too often, battering results in murder or serious injury. It is estimated that domestic violence is the cause of 1,300 deaths and 2 million injuries in the United States each year.
