Community Engagement Program (CEP)

Working with Community to End Violence

Our Community Engagement Program serves as a bridge between VIP services and the community, promoting social change through education and community-driven initiatives aimed at ending gender-based violence. Our goal is to create a supportive and informed community that participates in preventing, intervening, and improving the overall well-being of individuals affected by domestic violence.

Our program operates through three key components:

  • Promotoras Initiative: Comprising a dedicated group of women who are survivors of domestic violence and former clients of VIP, the Promotoras Initiative engages in meaningful dialogues with the community based on their personal experiences. They conduct outreaches citywide, reaching places such as laundromats, grocery stores, beauty and nail salons, doctor’s offices, subway stations, Latin-American Consulates, NYC Parks, and participate in resource and health fairs. Through these interactions, they distribute bilingual educational materials and converse with people about abusive relationships, emphasizing the availability of help in their own language.

  • Preventive Workshops for Youth and Adults: Our community educator conducts workshops in English or Spanish, addressing topics such as domestic violence, teen dating violence, and reproductive justice. These workshops are conducted in various settings, including middle and high schools, community centers, non-profits, government offices, and more. By providing education in diverse environments, we aim to raise awareness and empower individuals to recognize and combat gender-based violence.

  • Digital Education & Outreach: Using our social media channels, we disseminate information to inform and educate the community about different forms of gender-based violence and the services we offer. Our webpage serves as a comprehensive resource, offering insights into recognizing abusive relationships, seeking help, and outlining the services available to navigate the path out of domestic violence and initiate a holistic healing process.

Our Community Engagement Program actively contributes to dismantling the roots of gender-based violence, fostering a community that is well-equipped, informed, and empowered to take collective action against domestic violence.
